Speaker: Edwin Jewell
Later on Monday morning, two events were held at the headquarters of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV) in A’Beckett Street, Melbourne. Firstly, The Ephemera Society of Victoria featured Ed Jewell, who spoke on “Collecting Australian Internment Ephemera”. Ed shared with the audience of nearly 60 people some of the highlights of his personal collection of internment ephemera. The materials that Ed had collected were from both world wars, and featured objects that documented the experience of the internees and prisoners, and had mostly been made by the internees themselves. The items were often personal and moving, and were also rare and sometimes unique. A newsletter written on the obverse of a fruit can label was a typical example of the resourcefulness of the internees.
After a pleasant break for morning tea, the Royal Historical Society event followed.
