Presented by The Public Record Office of Victoria

On Thursday 27th July, The Public Record Office of Victoria (PROV) held the launch of their exhibition “Collective City”, which contrasts historic photos of Melbourne from the PROV collection with commissioned, contemporary images of our city. More than 250 people attended the launch event, which after the brief opening speeches allowed the audience to explore the exhibition in the large display space available at PROV’s gallery at 99 Shiel Street, North Melbourne. The images ranged from the opening of the first meeting of the Federal Parliament in Melbourne in 1901, which featured a magnificent Chinese dancing dragon in front of the steps of the State Parliament Building, to individuals in modern Melbourne playing and relaxing in the modern city. There are images of public events such as marches and demonstrations, and pictures of the mundane and everyday life of the city and its built environment of buildings both familiar and disappeared. The exhibition will remain open until December this year.
