Challenges and rewards in re-creating an 18th century library
Speaker: John Byrne
John Byrne has been collecting rare books by, and related to, Samuel Johnson for over fifty years. Johnson’s library was sold shortly after his death and in a four-day sale was listed in a catalogue of 662 lots. The books therein are poorly described and most of the lots contain multiple volumes of which the titles are not given. John will display books from Johnson’s library, including some owned by Johnson or to which he subscribed, and tell of his adventures in hunting down these treasures.
