<p>The Cowlishaw Collection, purchased in 1943 from the estate of physician and bibliophile, Dr Leslie Cowlishaw, illustrates the history of medicine and shows how it developed from witchcraft into a science. While several anatomists made significant contributions to the field in the 16th century, history has tended to laud Vesalius and his <em>De Fabrica</em> over his one-time pupil Matteo Colombo, whose <em>De re Anatomica, </em>also based on anatomical observations and human dissection, was an important and successful publication in its day.</p>
