Japanese woodblock printed books from the Rare Book Collection

Tucked away in the bowels of State Library Victoria’s Rare Book Collection lives a small collection of pre-1800 Japanese Ukiyo-e (浮世絵) works. A form of 木版画 (mokuhanga) Ukiyo-e is a technique of wood printing common during the Edo period. From Utagawa Yoshitori to Katsuhika Hokusai, this talk will explore the collection’s fascinating history, cultural significance, and its journey from Japan to the State Collection.
