On Saturday July 22nd , almost 200 guests gathered in the Conversation Quarter of the State Library Victoria (SLV) to hear Shane Carmody deliver a genuinely exciting and informative talk, “Charting the Heavens”. Shane traversed astronomical history from the 2nd century CE writings of Ptolemy, though the later advances of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo and Newton, right up until James Cook’s observation of the Transit of Venus in 1769. Shane focused on some of the extraordinary astronomical works held at State Library Victoria, illustrating his wide-ranging talk with numerous examples from the collection. Guests were given the rare opportunity to view many of these works during a special public viewing.
