Join RACS Archivist Elizabeth Milford as she presents a range of early surgical texts, from Gui de Chauliac’s 14th century Chirurgia Magna to the work of surgeons like Ambroise Paré, whose compilation L’oeuvres d’ Ambroise Paré appeared in 1575. Surgeons like de Chauliac and Paré drew upon ancient sources, such as Hippocrates and Galen, but also worked from direct observation and surgical experience. At a time when the study of anatomy was becoming increasingly important, writers from this formative period provide extraordinary insights into the development of surgical knowledge. The session will include an opportunity to view a selection of rare books and to visit the rare book display in the College Museum.
