Collecting was an important pastime for Grand Tourists. While souvenirs were a memento and class signifier of wealth and culture, avid collectors distinguished themselves among their peers by building large collections in the pursuit of knowledge. For the amateur historian, scientist, or archaeologist, visiting sites where objects buried for centuries were being exhumed added another level of authenticity to the experience of discovery and collecting. The speakers will expand on the collecting interests of Grand Tourist Sir William Hamilton and the Campi Phlegraei.

Presented by: Archives and Special Collections, The University of Melbourne
in the Noel Shaw Galley, Baillieu Library, The University of Melbourne
