The Grand Tour
Sir William Hamilton and the Campi Phlegraei: the collector and the volcano
Speakers: Sally Foster and Susan Millard
Join curators Sally Foster and Susan Millard for a floor talk in the Baillieu Library’s exhibition, The Grand Tour. Collecting was an important pastime for Grand Tourists. While souvenirs were a memento and class signifier of wealth and culture, avid collectors distinguished themselves among their peers by building large collections in the pursuit of knowledge. For the amateur historian, scientist, or archaeologist, visiting sites where objects buried for centuries were being exhumed added another level of authenticity to the experience of discovery and collecting. The speakers will expand on the collecting interests of Grand Tourist Sir William Hamilton and the Campi Phlegraei.
